Carbon Abyss Red: The Final Design Is Locked In
After a lot of experimenting with colours, finishes and small details, the final design of the Vosper Carbon Abyss Red is officially locked in.
This is one of the models I’ve spent the most time refining because I wanted it to feel like its own watch rather than simply another familiar homage design with a different dial.
The final result combines forged carbon, deep red detailing and a compact 38.5mm stainless steel case into something that feels distinctly Vosper.
The Dial That Started It All
The centrepiece of the Carbon Abyss is the forged carbon dial.
Rather than using a printed carbon pattern, the dial has the irregular layered appearance that makes forged carbon so interesting in the first place. Dark grey and black fibres move across the surface while flashes of red appear throughout the material.
Because of the nature of the pattern, each dial has its own character. No two pieces will present exactly the same way.
Under direct light the red becomes much more noticeable, while in darker conditions the dial takes on a much deeper, almost charcoal appearance.
That changing character is exactly what I wanted from this watch.
Why Red?
Earlier versions of the Carbon Abyss explored a few different combinations, but the red version kept standing out.
The final watch uses a deep burgundy-red timing bezel rather than an overly bright red. It ties into the colour running through the forged carbon without competing with the dial.
The intention was never to make an aggressively colourful watch. I wanted the red to reveal itself gradually rather than dominate the entire design.
The result is still easy to wear every day, but it has significantly more personality than a traditional black diver.
Compact 38.5mm Proportions
Another important decision was the case size.
The Carbon Abyss measures 38.5mm, giving it the presence of a modern sports watch without becoming oversized.
I think this size works particularly well with the dial because the carbon remains the focus of the watch rather than being overwhelmed by a large case or bezel.
The case and bracelet are produced from 316L stainless steel, with a combination of finishes that complement the darker dial and bezel.
Built Around the TMI NH35
Inside the Carbon Abyss is the TMI NH35 automatic movement.
The NH35 has become popular for good reason. It is straightforward, dependable and widely serviceable, while providing both hacking and hand-winding functionality.
For a watch designed to be worn regularly rather than kept in a box, it made sense to use a proven movement with an established track record.
There is no battery to replace. Movement of the wrist winds the watch automatically, and it can also be wound manually through the crown.
K1 Crystal and 100 Metre Water Resistance
The final production specification uses a K1 crystal and is rated to 100 metres of water resistance.
K1 sits between traditional mineral glass and sapphire in its characteristics, offering good impact resistance while maintaining excellent clarity.
Combined with the 100m water resistance, the Carbon Abyss is intended to be a genuinely practical everyday sports watch rather than simply a design exercise.
Designed as a Vosper
One of the biggest changes for me has been moving away from simply building watches around existing visual templates and beginning to establish a recognisable Vosper Watch Co identity.
The Carbon Abyss is an important part of that.
The dial carries the Vosper branding and Carbon Abyss name, while the materials, colour choices and overall configuration were selected specifically for this model.
It is still built around proven components and a reliable Japanese movement, but the finished watch is intended to stand on its own.
Each piece is assembled, inspected and QC checked here in Western Australia before being made available.

The design is now locked in, and I’m genuinely happy with where this one ended up.
The forged carbon gives every example its own character, while the red detailing gives the Carbon Abyss an identity that is immediately recognisable without becoming over the top.
For Vosper Watch Co, this feels like another step toward creating watches that people recognise for the design itself rather than simply the style that inspired them.
